The Brutalist is an astonishing, monumental, maste The Brutalist is an astonishing, monumental, masterful film that’s up there with the Godfather and Citizen Kane.

Loosely based on a true story, László Toth, a fictional modernist architect and Hungarian Jew, survives the Holocaust and emigrates to America to rebuild his life and career under the patronage of a super-wealthy man.

Adrien Brody (as Toth) gives a sublime performance (as good as his Academy Award-winning portrayal of Władysław Szpilmanin in Polanski’s The Pianist).

The Brutalist is directed and produced by Brady Corbet —from a screenplay that he co-wrote with Mona Fastvold. Shot on 70 mm (to give it, Corbet says, its 50s feel), it’s technically brilliant and panoramic. It also has a haunting score.

At 3 ½ hours long (including a 15- minute intermission), it’s extraordinary that this epic was made in 33 days (and on a budget of less than $10 million).

In the Q&A afterwards, Brady pitched it (in answers that he joked were almost as long as the film!) as a movie about architecture. But it’s also about the immigrant experience, capitalism and the corrupting influence of extreme wealth, antisemitism and xenophobia, imagination, human dignity, artistic integrity and the American dream.  I would have gladly sat glued to it for another hour.

It’s being released in the UK 24 January 2025. The Oscars are calling….
